Born in Shandong Province, Liuqin (a plucked string instrument) enjoys a history of more than 200 years only. Based on its original constitution of two strings and seven bridges, Liuqin has undergone different forms of three-string, four-string, five-string, seven-string and double-resonator. Widely used in accompaniment in local operas, solos and concertos, and folk music bands, the four-string instrument is warmly welcomed by musicians.The reformed musical instrument continues to function in Liuqin Opera of Shandong Province and Sizhou Opera of Anhui Province. With Liuqin, the traditional drama is enriched with a taste of vitality, making the operatic vocal music richer and freer. The successful reform of Liuqin brings further development to itself, and it also helps the compositional art of Liuqin unprecedentedly prosperous. Mushrooming are the Liuqin solos, concertos, and suites, which see their exquisite representation in "Golden Waves on Silver Lake", "Spring Comes to Yihe River", "Bizika Gala" etc.. These rich compositions have developed the Liuqin music. The reformed Liuqin, playing the treble clef in a musical band, coordinates well with plucked instruments, string instruments and wind instruments respectively, resulting in unexpected sound effects.The art of Liuqin in traditional opera should be further saved and developed.
