Research On Wang Huiran's Music Contributions

Wang Huiran is a musician who has made great achievements in the field of folk music.His musical contribution is comprehensive.As a performer,he is good at playing the pipa,liuqin and other national instruments;as an instrument reformer,he has succeeded in the reform of the four-stringed treble liuqin;as a composer,he has created a large number of excellent instrumental works;and as an educator,a number of outstanding musical talents have been trained.Wang Huiran lived in Shanghai when during his youth.His major musical achievements were achieved during the time from 1956 when he came to the Public Security Army Cultural Troupe,the later Jinan avant-garde singing and dancing troupe,until he retired in 1996.The main contributions of this period are: the successful reform of three-stringed and four-stringed treble liuqin,the creation of great works such as The Dance Music of the Yis,the Spring of the Yi River and Melody on a Moonlit River,the invention and application of the “four-fingered wheel” technique of pipa as well as the conduct to avant-garde national orchestras to perform in various places.After his retirement,he settled in Zhuhai.Then he mainly contributed to the continuing the education of liuqin and pipa performances,establishing the Zhuhai Women's Indoor Orchestra and popularizing the knowledge of folk music.This paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is Wang Huiran's musical career description,which is divided into four stages: the first acquaintance of five sounds(1936-1956),the quest for the road(1956-1970),the famous music scene(1970-1996),and the cruising of the South China Sea(1996-present).The second chapter is Wang Huiran's contribution to liuqin.There will be a introduction to the background,ideas and successful reasons of the reform.The third chapter is Wang Huiran's contribution to pipa.In this chapter the author will analyze creative ideas and performance skills from his most representatively distorted works.The fourth chapter is Wang Huiran's other music contributions,focusing on his other music creation and music popularization besides liuqin and pipa.The conclusion makes an overall analysis of Wang Huiran's music contribution,his music contribution mainly concentrated in the field of Pipa and Liuqin,especially in playing,creating and educating,and tries to evaluate the great musician from a historical perspective.
