Considering that knowledge of traditional festivals, as the representative of intangible cultural heritage, includes accumulated, event-centric and not a material carrier experiences in the long term, it is difficult to completely represent the complex relationship among different knowledge in the form of text, graphics, images, video or other multimedia types.Knowledge classification of traditional festivals, and the construction, representation and storage of knowledge ontology are researched in this thesis based on analyzing the scope of traditional festivals and characteristics of knowledge. Classification of knowledge is established through the breakdown of knowledge areas and revealing the intrinsic link of knowledge from different aspects, and then, entities and properties are defined based on CIDOC CRM for constructing knowledge ontology of traditional festivals. Finally, knowledge ontology storage is achieved through the formal representation of knowledge based on OWL DL. The main research includes:Firstly, hierarchy model of knowledge of traditional festivals is revealed from five aspects, which are Activity. Temporal, Place, Actor and Thing, through the breakdown of knowledge areas and from classifying different type of the elements of knowledge in the perspective of granularities.Secondly, the important concepts(entities) in the field of traditional festivals and their key relationships(properties) between concepts is extracted for constructing knowledge ontology based on CIDOC CRM, and then links between various knowledge points, which have no direct relationship or an event involves only, are established to construct the knowledge ontology of traditional festivals.Thirdly, following the syntax of OWL DL knowledge representation requirements, a corresponding abstract class (including entities and properties between them) is defined and then instances of these classes is defined for the knowledge storage in the database. Finally, the Dragon Boat Festival, which is one of the most important Chinese traditional festivals, is used as an example to verify the results of this study, and conclusions show that a good solution is provided knowledge analysis, representation and storage of traditional festivals and other intangible cultural heritage.
