This thesis aims to reach after the essence of reduplication of verbs and adjectives in Wenzhou dialect by analyzing several aspects of it:the range of words that can be reduplicated; the syntactic function of reduplication in a sentence; the meaning of reduplication. It consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 is about the origin and former studies about this subject. Chapter 2 relates to the phonetic forms of reduplication of verbs and adjectives in Wenzhou dialect. Chapter 3 and Chapter4 discuss the range, syntactic function and meaning of verb reduplication and adjective reduplication separately. Chapter 5 analyses adjective and verb reduplication in some other dialects, and lend credit to our former proposition. Chapter 6 is the conclusion. We conclude that by reduplicating itself, a verb or an adjective is quantified, namely reduplication endow quantity to a verb or an adjective. Many scholars proposed formerly that reduplication relates to augmentation and attenuation. However we insist that reduplication is a neutral measure that relate to neither augmentation nor attenuation. Moreover it also does not relate to large quantity or small quantity. A reduplicated verb is endowed with duration, boundary, and descriptiveness simultaneously, while with a reduplicated adjective vitality. Quantification also relates to reduplicated verbs and adjectives' being non-derogatory, controllable, and colloquial. |
