Reduplication has always been an important subject in the study of Chinese grammar.Since the 1950s,studies of Chinese reduplication have emerged one after another. From reduplicated forms and meanings to reduplicated mechanisms and motivations, research topics of Chinese reduplication continue to deepen.Research on the reduplication of Chinese dialects has also received attention. And reduplication of dialects often has different characteristics from that of Mandarin. This dissertation describes and analyzes the reduplicated forms of adjectives in Wuzhou dialect,in order to enrich the research on the reduplication of Chinese dialects, and try to provide more possibilities for exploring the features of Chinese reduplication. The dissertation consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the geography, history and the phonetic system of Wuzhou dialect. It also gives a brief review of the relevant academic literature, and explains the research object, significance, method and source of corpus.Chapter 2 describes the adjective reduplicative forms in Wuzhou dialect, including their bases, structrues and grammatical meanings. In this chapter, adjective reduplications are sorted as inflectional reduplications and reduplication-like constructions.Inflectional reduplications includes the reduplication of monosyllabic and disyllabic adjectives, which contain degree-related grammatical meanings.Reduplication-like constructions includes reduplicated combinations of AABB and ABAB and construction with reduplicative affixes, which focus on describing a specific state.Besides, adjective reduplications are always closely related to the expression of subjective emotion, which can be manifested by the embedding of the expressive affixes kw(?)i35 鬼 and h(?)i53嘿.Chapter 3 analyzes the syntactic function of adjective reduplications in Wuzhou dialect. On one hand, most adjective reduplications can function as predicate, complement, attributive and adverbial in sentences. As predicate, complement and adverbial, adjective reduplications can be optionally followed by ti53啲.As attributive, they must co-occur with the attributive markers kε33 嘅and ti53 啲.On the other hand, adjective reduplications in Wuzhou dialect can be mainly modified by temporal adverbs, degree adverbs and demonstrative pronouns.Chapter 4 discusses several problems related to the adjective reduplications in Wuzhou dialect.Firstly,We compare ti53啲,ti35哋,k(?)m35 m(?)n53 噉蚊/k(?)m35 噉,kε33嘅 after adjective reduplications with 的1,的2 and 的3 put forward by Zhu Dexi, find that they partly overlap with 的2 in distribution.Pragmatically they can all refer to the manner and state preceding them. But because of their different natures, they also have different functions. For example,ti53啲 can sometimes attenuate the degree of state expressed by the adjective reduplications,k(?)m35 m(?)n53 sometimes expresses uncertainty, while kε33嘅 can expresses affirmation.Secondly,we holds that degree adverbs modify adjective reduplication based on compatibility of quantity and pragmatic needs.Thirdly,we point out that the phenomenon of demonstrative pronouns modifying adjective reduplications is related to the expression of subjective quantity.Chapter 5 summarizes the dissertation. |
