A Functionalist Perspective To The Subtitle Translation Of In The Mood Of Love

With the development of cross-cultural communication, audio-visual culture has played a significant role in the cultural exchanges. More and more translators devote themselves into subtitle translation study. The author of this thesis has introduced a study on subtitle translation from functionalist perspective by qualitative approach.In the framework of Skopostheorie, subtitle translation is regarded as a purposeful action. The director's Skopos and the expectation of target audiences determine the Skopos of subtitle translation. According to the Skopos of the director and target audiences'expectation, translator analyzes Chinese subtitles of In the Mood for Love from function to text type so as to know the effective strategies at pragmatic, cultural, linguistic and text-specific levels.According to the comparison and analysis, the translator has analyzed the various factors which may influence subtitle translation under the Skopostheorie guidance, so that a good foundation is laid for choosing effective strategies and avoiding the translation errors.
