For the majority of the overseas students who study Chinese, listening is very difficult. With the poor teaching quality and the traditional teaching methods, their listening ability is far less satisfactory. Particularly, those who study Chinese at the preliminary stage have more difficulty in listening to Chinese, but they have not been involved in effective and appropriate training. As a result, they have made little progress in their listening ability, and in turn, their poor listening ability affects listening teaching. The Filipino students are taken as subjects in the test. Classroom tests are adopted to find out what problems the students have during their Chinese study. In the tests, the students are given respective tests in terms of spelling, sentences, and short passages. In the spelling test, the students are tested in aspects of consonants, vowels, and intonation to find out the difficult points and the reasons why they have made the mistakes. By summing up and analyzing the results of the tests, the strategies for improving listening teaching and discussions of teaching and teaching methods are proposed, including:conducting relevant teaching, studying by listening more, repeating, listening carefully to find the differences in the light of the difficulties the students have in listening, listening practice being done gradually in sounds teaching at all the stages of Chinese learning, multi-media teaching, task-centered teaching, teaching with games involved and creating a good listening learning environment. It is hoped that the series of methods and strategies based on the research and studies of the Filipino students'listening ability at the preliminary stage will be of some help for improving the listening ability of the Filipino students.
