Situation-Bound Utterances (SBUs) are hghly conventionalized, prefabricated units whose occurrence is tied to more or less standardized communicative situations. SBUs behave like words and the meaning of SUBs usually apply within relevant situational frames. According to the nature of their specific pragmatic extension, SBUs can be divided into three types:plain SBUs, charged SBUs and loaded SBUs.In order to investigate the acquisition and use of Chinese SBUs of overseas students in China, a survey was conducted with 40 overseas students whose Chinese are at intermediate and high levels. The findings are as follows:communicative situations are critical for comprehending SBUs; the longer the overseas students stay in China, the better they acquire and use SBUs; the overseas students more or less have difficulties in understanding and using SBUs with culture-specific pragmatic property.Based on the analysis of the misunderstandings and errors, this paper sums up the factors that affect the acquisition and use of SBUs from four aspects:individual learner strategies, teachers, teacing materials and external environment. At last, this paper makes some suggestions for teachers and teaching materials for reference.
