Research On The Mental Health And Coping Styles Of The Elderly In Suzhou

Objective: To research the mental health and coping styles of the elderly in Suzhou, to find the risk factors to the mental health and coping styles of the aged were discussed and to provide the credible evidence for the government and social organization in taking measures and enhance the life quality of the elderly.Method: A urban community and a rural community in Suzhou were sampled randomly, and all elderly aged more than 55 years of the two communities were investigated. The investigation tools contain the questionnaire of General Life, SCL-90 and Questionnaire of Coping Styles. Data was analyzed by SPSS13.0 ,which include the following statistic methods, such as t-test, F-test, correlative analyze and multiple linear regression.Results: 1. The mental health level of the elderly in Suzhou is higher than the nation norm. Based on P-value, there are significant differences in 5 factors of the SCL-90 checklist between the urban elderly and the rural elderly. 2. The factors of sex, age, income, educational background and coping styles are closely related with the elderly mental health. 3.The coping styles are different between the urban elderly and the rural elderly in Suzhou.And based on P-value, there are significant differences in the coping styles of self-blame, fantasy and rationalizatione. 4.The coping styles of the elderly change with the factors of sex and income. Compared with the aged females, the old males take the different coping styles when they faced the same problem. And among the respondents, the good income groups would take the more mature coping styles. 5. The results indicated that the passive coping styles had negative correlation with the elderly mental health, and the positive coping styles can improve the elderly psychological health. Conclusion:1. The situation of the elderly mental health in Suzhou is satisfactory. On the pshchological health , the urban elderlies have a higher level than the rural ones.2.
