Deixis phenomenon is a kind of common and universal phenomenon in human language, and meanwhile the human language is featured by subjectivity(Cheng Shufang,2007).That is to say, the speaker is taken as the deictic centre. But because of the difference of history, culture and psychological factors between different countries, the selection of deictic words is different. Even pointing at a same object, the choice of demonstratives is not always consistent with each other. By research, scholars home and abroad find that there are more deixis words in Chinese language and Chinese users prefer to use proximal deictic words(这/这些/这儿/这边/这里)to shorten the distance between the speaker and the listener. However, English speakers tend to chose distal demonstrative words (that/those/there) to keep individual space. The present study, based on the world famous novel Jane Eyre(written by Charlotte Bronte) and its Chinese version(translated by Zhu Qingying), analyzes the specific frequency of this/that and这/那and their plural forms when they indicate spatial distance, temporal distance and discoursal distance with the assistance of Concordance for Windows 2.0 (Wconcord for short) and ICTCLAS.Chapter one presents the background of the study, elaborates several aims of this thesis, sets the scope of the inquiry, and also makes a clear outline of the organization of this thesis.Chapter two is literature review. It introduces the definition, egocentricity, classification and usages of deixis and expounds the previous studies on这/那and this/that. Through the studies, the author concludes that although proximal and distal deictic words have been studied from many perspectives by the researchers, there still lacks a holistic approach of proximal and distal deictic words'corresponding translation. So the present study, based on the whole texts of Jane Eyre and its Chinese version, verifies theories that the scholars home and abroad have offered and analyzes the corresponding situation of the proximal and distal deictic words in translation.Chapter three explores the research questions, the corpus, the procedure of the data collection and analysis of the present study.Chapter four includes four parts:The first part analyzes the frequency of this/that and这/那in corpus and we find that that is more popular than this and这is more frequently used than那;the second part investigates the spatial distance indicated by this/that and这/那and we conclude that demonstrative pronouns are predominantly in indicating spatial distance, non-equivalence in translation is at much higher frequencies and the selection of deictic words is influenced by psychological distance in both two languages. In the third part, we analyze the temporal distance indicated by this/that and这/那and we find that the total number of deixis in Chinese indicating temporal distance is larger than deixis in English and the general sense is the main factor influencing the translation, especially the translation of distal demonstrative. But psychological distance mainly influences the translation of proximal demonstrative. The last part investigates the discoursal distance indicated by this/that and这/那and we think the number of proximal demonstratives indicating discoursal distance is larger than distal demonstratives in English, proximal demonstrative is a big part of equivalence in translation and psychological distance has a greater impact on the translation of distal demonstrative.Chapter five makes a conclusion of this thesis, presents the limitations of the study and provides recommendations for the future studies.
