PICC lines have been used as a complement of chemotherapy in domestic hospitals since 2005. PICC insertions are simple, safe and less invasive, they remain for a long time in vessels, thus minimize the agony of repeatedly insertion. In contrast with high complication risk in peripheral venous and subclavian vein cannulation, PICC lines, with relatively minor complications and unpleasantness, are largely used in chemotherapy of cancer and becoming a primary application in chemotherapies. As it develops, the problems of inserting and maintaining PICC lines draw increasing attention as well.Purpose:The effect of PICC to chemotherapy patients and the performance of PICC insertion are analyzed in order to further discuss the application of PICC in chemotherapy, achieving better nursing care in chemotherapy and to ease the pain, prolong the span and improve the quality of life.Method:Cancer patients at China Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University from October 2007 to September 2010 are traced and observed, the records of complications and nursing care of both PICC and peripheral venous cannulation are obtained, various ways of inserting of PICC are observed. Complication risks and the duration of the PICC insertion are related to nursing condition, the effect of which are observed as well. Results:Seldinger Technique has a higher success rate and lower complication rate than one-time puncture; ultrasound guidance lowers the complication rate; types of internal jugular vein affect the occurrence of the displacement of the catheter; hospitalized patients are less vulnerable to infection ; different inserting approaches have various effects on the pass in and out of the catheter ; the work of hemorrhage treating and the recovery time of punctured spot could be lessened by applying the modified nursing technique.; phlebitis recovered to a better condition when modified nursing techniques are applied. Conclusion:The vein-protecting effect of PICC proved it particularly suitable for chemotherapy. Colored ultrasound guidance enables the selection of ideal inserting veins, avoiding complications to an utmost degree. New techniques such as Seldinger and hydrocolloid, in associate with surgical dressing e.g. Allevyn help a lot with preventing and treating complications. PICC could remain as longer duration as required as nursing techniques evolves and improves.
