Objective: To investigate the diagnosis and microsurgical treatment of intraspinal enterogenous cyst in order to elevate the rate of diagnosis and total resection and also improve the prognosis of patients. Method: 198 cases of intraspinal lesions which were treated in the Neurosurgery Department of Xinjiang Medical University First Affiliated Hospital from 1999 to 2009 were selected out. Passing through those strict in-and-out standards, 12 cases were confirmed as intraspinal enterogenous cyst at last and their clinical datas and prognosis were retrospectively analyzed and evaluated. Result: None of the 12 intraspinal enterogenous cysts was diagnosed preoperatively; All the 12 cases received microsurgical cystectomy which were approached via a dorsal or posterior laminectomy. 6 were totally resected, 4 were mostly partially resected, 2 cases received"cyst partial resection and subarachnoid-cyst shunt", only 1 was highly suspected during operation; 8 were confirmed as intraspinal enterogenous cyst(6 were enterogenous cyst (typeâ… ),1 was (typeâ…¡) and 1 was bronchogenous cyst (typeâ…¡)) by pathologic diagnosis at the first time, 4 were misdiagnosed(2 were cyst-like lesions, 2 were simple cysts). All the 12 cases received a re-diagnosis of pathologic examinations, 2 cases of enterogenous cyst (typeâ… ) were confirmed as enterogenous cyst (typeâ…¡), another 4 new cases were confirmed as enterogenous cyst(3 were enterogenous cyst (typeâ… ) and 1 was bronchogenous cyst (typeâ…¡)). Postoperatively, 1 belonged to glasgow outcome score(well) and spinal injury scale(D grade), 11 belonged to glasgow outcome score(well) and spinal injury scale(E grade), all the cases were followed from 6 months to 3 years, none recurrence was discovered. Conclusion: Intraspinal enterogenous cyst is a relatively rare kind congenital disease and it is easy to be misdiagnosed usually. Spinal MRI is the most preferred assistant physical examination and pathologic examination is the principal method for diagnosis. Maximum resection of the cyst on the base of saving spinal function is the most effective treatment to intraspinal enterogenous cyst. Total resection may cure the diease while partial resection may cause cyst recurrence and malignant change.
