Objective:To investigate the relationship beteen HPV16/18 infaction and expression of P73 and P53 protein in squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. Methods:The immunohistochemistrystaining assay was conducted to detect the expression of P53 and P73 in 46 cases with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, ranking for four degree(-)~(3+), (34 cases of well and moderately differentiated and 12 cases of poorly differentiated et al) and 30 normal mucosa cases, the infections of HPV16/18 DNA were determined by PCR.The date of this study was analyses using x2 test and Spearman rank correlation.Results:1. The expression rates of P53 and P73 showed difference between esophageal cancer tissue and normal mucosa (P=0.007,0.008,); The expression rates of p53 appeared to be correlated with gender and lymph node metastasis(P=0.047,0.028), but no correlated with the depth of invasion, differentiation of cancer tissue, gross observation and position of the tumor(P>0.05); The expression of P73 protein appeared to be correlated with differentiation of cancer tissue and lymph node metastasis(P=0.023,0.035), but there was not appear to be correlated with the depth of invasion, gross observation and position of the tumor(P>0.05).2. HPV16/18 infactions showed difference between esophageal cancer tissue and normal mucosa (P=0.007); HPV16/18 was not appear any correlation with differentiation of cancer tissue, lymph node metastasis, depth of invasion, gross observation and position of the tumor(P>0.05).3. P73 expression was corelated with P53 expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus(r=0.359,P=0.014),but there was no correlation in normal mucosa(r=0.273,P=0.144); The expression of P53 and P73 protein were not appear to be correlated with the HPV16/18 infaction(P= 0.845,0.901); there was not correlation beteen P53 and P73 in HPV positive and negative groups(r=-0.169,P=0.490; r=0.151,P=0.452).Conclusion:P53 and P73 were highly expressed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and the expression rate was positively correlated. We can know that P53 and P73 play a important role in The occurrence and development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. And P53 and P73 can be applied to the diagnosis and prognosis of esophageal cancer. HPV 16/18 was highly expressed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, but it was unrelated with P53 and P73. We can also know that HPV 16/18 is a risk factor in esophageal cancer but not the only factor. Beside that, esophageal cancer is a complex multi-factor process,if we can remove some interfere factor, maybe there would have corelated with them.
