Objective:Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the major cause of neonatal deaths and nervous developmental disorders. In recent years, it has been noted abnormal iron metabolism in the pathogenesis of brain injury, but the role of in HIE has not been cleared. In this paper, Through studing the serological changes of serum iron(SI) and serum ferritin (SF) and observeing relationship between varing degrees of HIE at SI and SF ,we explored the role of SI and SF in the pathogenesis of HIE.Methods:120 cases of full term newborn of 48 hours with asphyxia has been chosen from neonatology of our hospital ,which divided into 60 cases of simple asphyxia group, 30 cases with mild HIE, 20 cases of moderate HIE group and severe group HIE10 cases (deaths of newborn are not included in the scope of this study). Another 60 cases selected for the same period in our hospital out-patient medical care without perinatal asphyxia and hypoxia as the normal control group. Use complex assay to measure SI level and use radioimmunoassay to determin SF level of all infants of venous blood within 48 hours and 4 days.Results:1,The change of SI, SF levels with age in normal control group was no significant difference(P>0.05);2,SI, SF levels in mild, moderate and severe HIE groups were lower than the control groupin age≤48h(P<0.05); SI, SF levels in simple asphyxia group tended to decrease but no significant difference to the control group in age≤48h(P>0.05);3,SI, SF levels in simple asphyxia group and mild, moderate and severe HIE groups were significantly higher than the control group in 4-day(sP<0.05); SI ,SFof severe HIE group was significantly higher than mild and moderate HIE groups and simple asphyxia group(P<0.05). Conclusion:1. SI and SF levels vary with different ages and different levels of neonatal hypoxic- ischemic encephalopathy,The abnormal of Iron Metabolism may take part in HIE pathology.2. SI, SF levels in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy neonates is different from simple asphyxia, which reference for the early diagnosis of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
