OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study was to analyse and compare soft tissue lip profile between Chinese and Indian adult patients with class 1 malocclusion and normal growth pattern.MATERIALS AND METHODS:In this crosssectional and comparative study ,100 digital lateral cephalometric radiographs comprising of 50 Indian with 25 females and 25 males and 50 Chinese with 25 each females and males who were all class 1 adults, were cephalometrically analysed using Winceph 8 during the period from October 2010 till March 2011,in the Department of Orthodontics of Affiliated Hospital of Stomatology, Chongqing affiliated to Chongqing Medical University for comparing the saggital lip position and the degree of vertical stretch. RESULTS:In the 6 parameters of analysis among Chinese and Indians ,1 parameter(Ls-U1) was found to be significantly different. In respect to the comparison among males and females of same ethnic group,3 parameters(A-A',Ls-U1,Li-L1) were found to be significant.CONCLUSION:Soft tissue lip profile norms are specific for each and every ethnic group. The normative data for Chinese and Indian population should be used as a guide for diagnosis and treatment plan for orthodontics in China and India respectively.
