There are many profile evaluation methods during orthodontic diagnosis. Ricketts diagnosis technology is widely used in orthodontic practice. Recently Andrews puts forward a new way to analysis profile-Andrews profile analysis through a series research. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of the method through individuals with individual normal occlusion of Guangdong province; and explore the consistency of Ricketts and Andrews profile analysis. The study was dibided into two parts as following:1. The Andrews profile analysis of Guangdong students with normal occlusionObjective To obtain the referred values of Andrews profile analysis in Guangdong students with normal occlusion, and provide guideline for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Methods Students in GUANGDONG were extensively surveyed,38subjects (13males and25females) with normal occlusion were selected. Metallic markers were placed on the face to mark key structures. Then, lateral cephalogram for Andrews profile analysis was taken in natural head posture. Measurements were carried out by the same person. Statistics analysis was performed with SPSS17.0. Statistical analysis of the differences between males and females was done with f testing. A level of significance of5%was assigned and P values were determined. Result The referred values of Andrews profile analysis in Guangdong students with normal occlusion were obtained. FA point of central incisor was behind the GALL line. there are no differences between male and female (t=0.182,P=0.857). There are differences in values of G-Sn and Sn-Me’ between male and female. And G-Sn and Sn-Me’of male are longer than female. There are differences in Co-Go between male and female (t=3.671,P=0.001). Co-Go is short than G-Sn or Sn-Me’. Pogonion was behind the WILL plane. And there are no differences between male and female. Conclusion There may be a certain difference in craniofacial structures between participants and Caucasian. Due to these differences, orthodontists should follow different diagnostic criteria when making treatment planning.2. Compare Ricketts profile analysis with Andrews profile analysis on female individuals with individual norm occlusion. Objective To investigate the consistency of Ricketts and Andrews profile analysis whether there is consistency, and provide a theoretical basis for orthodontic diagnostic analysis and treatment planning. Methods A total of25normal female teenagers(with an average age of17.28±1.42years) were enrolled for this study. Metallic markers were placed on the face to mark key structures. Lateral cephalometric X-rays were taken under natural head position. After taken Ricketts and Andrews cephalometric analysis the measurement results were count by normal and non-normal, the statistical analysis using for X2test. Result21individuals shown normal with Ricketts analysis, however, only12individuals shown normal with Andrews profile analysis, X2=4.27, p<0.05. Conclusion Different results were obtained with different profile methods in cephalometric analysis. We should take into accout the difference when making treatment planning.
