Objectives: The first aim of the study is to establish normal standards of soft-tissue profile (STP) in Anhui adults with normal occlusion, to provide reference standards for the research of the facial STP. The second purpose is to choose sensitive variables from the normal standards of STP as esthetic index of facial profile to tell whether STP is beautiful or not, to provide references for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the clinical orthodontics. Methods: The first part of the study is carried out by taking the dental model and the cephalometric photography on the 102 Anhui adults with normal occlusion, who are screened from 2678 students in Wannan medical college. The data of measurement are got from the photography by IDAS software, and statistically evaluated by SPSS software. The 102 students with ideal profiles are again selected by three orthodontic doctors in the second part of the study, and the discriminant function formula is established by Fisher抯 discriminant analysis. Results: The norms with derivation of the measuring items on STP in Anhui adults with normal occlusion are established in the first part of the study. Moreover, 7 items, as follows: Li-Ns-Pos, Ls- Ns-Pos, Ls-B, Li-B, Sn-H, Bs-Li-FH and Z are chosen as the esthetic index of facial profile in the second part of the study. Conclusion: There are significant differences of SIP between male and female in Anhui adults, with more straight profile seen in females. Gender difference is significantly shown in vertical liner measurements, with the male抯 being higher in general. Female抯 chin is more protrusive then male抯. Additionally, the consistence of the discriminant function formula established in this study is well (Kapppa=0.5 1), with the correction ratio of discrimination being 75%.
