Objective To understand the usage of the status of literature retrieval resources before and after Literature retrieval courses among the medical students, exploring the main barriers to literature searching ability, so as to provide knowledge to improve further development for Literature retrieval course teaching and Literature Retrieval reform. Methods The medical students to selected a Literature retrieval courses during the spring term of 2010 were surveyed by questionnaires before and after the courses. Personal brief situation, Literature retrieval course learning, The approach of acquiring literature retrieval relevant knowledge and skills, The main purpose of learning literature retrieval skills, The most commonly used databases, The main barriers of learning literature retrieval courses,Internet usage, IAT, GSES scale, Social anxiety subscale of the self-consciousness scale, Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS(Chinese version)) and a self-designed questionnaire were employed for this study. Results 960 students were surveyed before Literature retrieval courses and 809 were surveyed after Literature retrieval courses. Significant differences were found in the necessity of having document retrieval lesson(χ~2=25.533,P <0.001);the help of academic degree(χ~2=20.948,P <0.001); the purpose of using database(χ~2=17.058,P <0.001);the number of reading professional literature (χ~2=57.547,P<0.001)and the frequencies using the results of literature(χ~2=126.111,P<0.001)in undergraduates between before and after the courses. After Literature retrieval courses electronic resource usage was higer than before Literature retrieval courses The results from multivariate analysis showed that before Literature retrieval courses electronic resource usage were associated with sex, the purpose of using the database, the frequencies using the results of literature, English level on the influence of foreign database retrieval, professional contact, social anxiety and the record of formal schooling. While after Literature retrieval courses, the results from multivariate analysis showed:male, the purpose of using the database were searching the studying materials, the number of reading professional literature more, the English level of foreign language database retrieval without difficulty, professional contact closely, the lower social anxiety scores and the record of formal schooling as a graduate student were the main factors influencing the usage of the electronic resource.Three barriers on the study of literature retrieval class are Poor ability to critically appraise the literature, Poor ability of English and Time is insufficient to operate, respectively. Conclusion Electronic resource usage is influenced by various factors. Some effective measures should be taken immediately to improve the usage of electronic resource.
