Background Spasticity is a common disorder in patients with injury of the brain and spinal card. Spasticity is a major cause of long-term disability.70%-80% of stroke patients are hemiplegic. All hemiplegic are partially with spams. It significantly impacts daily activities and quality of life. The treatment of spasticity includs muscle streching, physical therapy, electrical stimulation, oral spasmolytic drugs, Botulinum toxin injection, surgery, orthosis, Chinese medicine therapy, acupuncture treatment, et. The comprehensive measures were obtained certain curative effect, but in clinical practice, spasticity is still a great factor for rehabilitation. Objectives To investigate the effects of Qi-supplementing, activating-blood and relaxing tendons treatment (QART) combined with electrical stimulation(ES) on the improvement of motor, balance and daily living ability of hemiparetic stroke survivors with spasticity. Methods ninety-seven hemiparetic stroke survivors (including 47 cases with upper limbs and 50 cases with lower limbs) were stratified randomly into 2 groups according to the MAS(1&1+,2&3)of upper limbs and the CSS(7-9,10-12,13-16)of lower limbs:observation group(24 cases with upper limbs and 26 cases with lower limbs), receiving QART, ES, standard rehabilitation and acupuncture treatment, and control group(23 cases with upper limbs and 24 cases with lower limbs), receiving Tizanidine, standard rehabilitation and acupuncture treatment. The treatment was given six days a week for three weeks. The score of the modified Ashworth (MAS), the Fugl-Meyer scale(FMA)(upper limbs part), the modified Barthel index(MBI), the composite spasticity scale (CSS), the Fugl-Meyer ativities scale (FMA) (lower limbs part) and the berg balance scale(BBS) were measured before treatment, weekly during the 3-week treatment.Result The scores of the MAS, FMA, MBI, BBS are significant before and after treatment within groups (P<0.05), except that of the CSS and the FMA (2&3 level of upper limbs of the control group) (P>0.05). But they have no significant between the two grouops (P>0.05).Conclusion Our result sugest that the Qi-supplementing, activating-blood and relaxing tendons treatment combined with electrical stimulation can decrease spasticity in patients with stroke as Tizanidine. It can increase the motor, balance and daily living ability of both groups, without 2&3 level of upper limbs of the control group.
