BackgroundInsomnia is the common disease in the modern society. It affects the work and the quality of life. Meanwhile, it easily causes other functional and organic diseases, and even leads to the depression and anxiety neurosis. The sleep science has caught the attention around the world. Now particularly in the United States, Europe, Japan and China which will be about to enter the aging society, the sleep related immunity and longevity research will be more prominent, and how to regulate the sleep has become a livelihood issue. The population of insomnia has been growing, however, it has not been found exogenous hypnotics without side effects completely yet. Therefore the hypnotics which can exempt from side effects and simulate brain naturally occurring endogenous hypnotics, will be the focus of the treatment of insomnia in future. In addition, to explore non-pharma-cological means of the treatment of insomnia will be of greater concern.Acupuncture classes including auricular, acupuncture, catgut embedding treatment of insomnia, can reduce excess and tonify deficiency to adjust yin and yang. It can regulate sleep rhythm, and promote normal "sleep-wakefulness" cycle of recovery. Further more, Acupuncture treatment has fewer side effects, no addiction, reliable and lasting effect, so it has the considerable advantage.ObjectiveTo compare the curative effect of acupoint catgut embedding therapy and acupuncture therapy, to provide the clinical basis for treating incoordination between heart and kidney type of insomnia by catgut embedding therapy.Methods60 patients from the outpatient department in ChangRong Chinese Medicine United clinics of Taipei were selected according to the diagnosis criteri on, divided to the treatment group of 30 cases and the control group of 30 cases. Both groups selected the sets of acupoints:1.xinshu 2. shenshu (both sides). Catgut embedding therapy group:to treat once a week. Acupuncture group:to treat 3 times per week. Two groups both considered one month as a course of treatment and cured two courses. Observed the clinical efficacy, after the first period of treatment and the second period of treatment. Established a database for statistical analysis by SPSS17.0.ResultsAccording to the statistical analysis,in the treatment group, the total effective rate was 76.7% and the curative rate of was 43.3%, while the total effective rate was 70.0% and the curative rate of was 33.4% in the control group after the first course of treatment. Two groups had no statistical significance (P>0.05), which mean both groups showed similar efficacy. In addition, in the treatment group, the total effective rate was 93.3% and the curative rate of was 70.0%, while the total effective rate was 73.3% and the curative rate of was 56.6% in the control group after the second course of treatment. Two groups had statistical significance (P<0.05), which mean the efficacy of the treatment group was better than the control group. In the first course of treatment group, the total effective rate was 76.7%, while the second course of the total effective rate was 93.3%. Compared the effects between two courses, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) which mean the second course of treatment is more effective than the first course of treatment. In the first course of control group, the total effective rate was 70.0%, the second course of the total effective rate was 73.3%. Compared the effects between two courses, there was no significant difference (P> 0.05), which mean the efficacy of the first and the second course in the control group rather.ConclusionsThe catgut embedding therapy contributed a good curative effect than the acupuncture group in treating incoordination between heart and kidney type of insomnia. Further more, the second course of treatment in the catgut embedding group is more effective than the first course of treatment. The catgut embedding therapy had fewer side effects, and was a safe, reliable, simple treatment of insomnia. It adapt to the modern fast-paced life, and was worth promoting on the clinic.
