BackgroundInsomnia is one of the most common diseases. The morbidity of insomnia has risen year by year because of the quickening pace of the modern life. Insomnia makes patients feel dreadful and anxiety and become more easier to be mentally ill. Chronic insomnia may impair cognitive ability such as attention, calculation and memory. The pathogenesis of insomnia is still unclear. Some theories pointed out that it mainly associated with cerebral vascular insufficiency, sleeping substance, internal inhibition and biological clock. There are five types treatment in Western Medicine, including benzodiazepines, antidepressants, antihistamines, barbiturates or nonbarbiturates, antipsychotics and other sedatives. All kinds of medication have a certain effect on short-term treatment, but are weak in a long-term treatment and contain side effects.Chinese medicine considers that insomnia is related to the function disorders of heart, liver, kidney and brain. Meanwhile, some clinical therapies examined that Chinese herbal and acupuncture therapy had a certain effect on curing insomnia with a lower side effect and higher safety.Abdominal acupuncture therapy is the research achievements of Professor Bo Zhiyun, which has the specialties of "standardizational prescription, normalizational operation, methodizational diagnosis". It is distinguished by the specialty that there is a corresponding prescription to each disease. Any disease has only one corresponding prescription once it is diagnosed correctly. The therapy of treating incoordination between Heart and Kidney type of insomnia with abdominal acupuncture is now submitted. This therapy probes into the effectiveness of treating incoordination between Heart and Kidney type of insomnia with Abdominal acupuncture, which is based on my tutor's research of abdominal acupuncture, and it may provide another way to cure incoordination between Heart and Kidney type of insomnia that is safe, simple and has no side effects.ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the outcome of clinical treatment of incoordination between Heart and Kidney type of insomnia with abdominal acupuncture therapy.MethodsA total sample of 70 participants with incoordination between Heart and Kidney type of insomnia was divided into abdominal acupuncture and drug group using PEMS3.1 software to group randomly. Abdominal acupuncture group adopted the treatment of abdominal acupuncture every day. Meanwhile, drug group used Diazepam Tablets 1mg per time per day. Each treating period for both groups was lasting for 10 days, and a total of two months period. The evaluation of the sleeping quality and the effectiveness after treatment would process in four periods:before treatment, one treatment period later, two treatment period later and one month after treatment finished.ResultsAbdominal acupuncture group with 34 patients had an effective rate of 85.3% after one treatment period (5 recovery cases,12 markedly cases,12 effective cases and 5 invalid cases), an effective rate of 88.2% after two treatment period (10 recovery cases,11 markedly cases,9 effective cases and 4 invalid cases), and an effective rate of 91.1% one month after treatment finished (11 recovery cases,9 markedly cases,10 effective cases and 3 invalid cases). Drug group with 32 patients had an effective rate of 96.9% after one treatment period (10 recovery cases,13 markedly cases,8 effective cases and 1 invalid cases), an effective rate of 93.8% after two treatment period (9 recovery cases, 14 markedly cases,7 effective cases and 2 invalid cases), and an effective rate of 75.0% one month after treatment finished (5 recovery cases,8 markedly cases,4 effective cases and 8 invalid cases). In addition, the results indicated that both therapies were significant after one treatment period and in one month after treatment finished (P<0.05), while there were no difference between both groups after two treatment period. The evaluation of sleeping quality between two groups had a significant difference after one treatment period and in one month after treatment finished (P<0.05), while there were no difference between both groups after two treatment period. In drug group, the significant difference existed between two-month and four-month treatments (P<0.05), while in abdominal acupuncture group there was no significant difference (P>0.05).ConclusionAbdominal acupuncture therapy and drug therapy both contributed certain effects to the improvement of insomnia. The effectiveness of short-term treatment for both therapies was relevant; however, acupuncture therapy was more effective for long-term treatment.
