Objectives:This study aimed to investigate the situation concerning postpartum contraceptive related knowledge, attitude, practice among the obstetric medical staff and the postpartum women; to compare postpartum contraceptive related knowledge, attitude, practice between the obstetric medical staff and the postpartum women.Methods:From February 2011 to March 2011,178 obstetric medical staff and 189 postpartum women from 3 tertiary hospitals in Changsha city had been enrolled in this study. The questionnaire was self-designed on the basis of consulting a large amount of literature and had been revised after experts'evaluation and a pilot study. The survey included general information and related knowledge, attitude, practice of postpartum contraception. The data were inputted and analyzed with SPSS for Windows Version 13.0.Results:1. Postpartum contraception related KAP among the obstetric medical staff(1) The average score of the obstetric medical staff was 6.35±1.401 (lowest score was 3, highest score was 10).93.2% obstetric medical staff lacked the knowledge about IPPI.>70% obstetric medical staff think that hormonal contraceptives can't be used during lactation.(2) The average score among the obstetric medical staff on the attitude was 22.65±2.290 (lowest sore was 17, highest sore was 25).>90%obstetric medical staff think all attitude titles are necessary for education.(3) Regarding the postpartum contraception,96.6%(172/178) obstetric medical staff have offered education, but only 54.1%(93/172)of them did frequently. The educational methods were just to simply list on the discharge instructions or orally explained the issues of contraception, among which the 3 highest methods educated were limited to condom (81.6%), IUD (64.9%) and the time that intercourse should be avoided (56.3%)2. Postpartum contraception related KAP among the postpartum women(1) The average score on the postpartum contraception knowledge among the postpartum women was 4.53±1.253 (lowest score was 1, highest was 8).97.4% postpartum women lacked knowledge about IPPI.>70% postpartum women think hormonal contraceptives can't be used during lactation.(2) The average score on the attitude among the postpartum women was 21.48±2.792 (lowest score was 13, highest score was 25).>85% postpartum women think all attitude titles are necessary for education.(3) 67.7% postpartum women reported that they acquired education from the obstetric medical staff, but only 54% postpartum women have reported active consultation with obstetric medical staff about postpartum contraception. The educational methods and contents were the same as obstetric medical staf's reports.3. Comparison of postpartum contraception related KAP between the obstetric medical staff and the postpartum women(1) Concerning the contraception starting from the time when postpartum sex life begins and condoms as a contraceptive method which can prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the correct rates among the two groups were high and then is of no statistics significance. On other titles, the obstetric medical staff's correct rate was higher than that of postpartum women.(2) Regarding the attitude of postpartum contraception education, the two groups all think that the obstetric staff should educate the postpartum women on postpartum contraception.(3) 53.4% obstetric medical staff and 46.6% postpartum women regarded pamphlets as the best educational method.Conclusions:1. The obstetric medical staff and the postpartum women all lacked postpartum contraception-related knowledge.2. The two groups were active on attitude of postpartum contraception education.3. Postpartum contraceptive education was insufficient, educational method was simplex. 4. Pamphlet was regarded as the best educational method by both the obstetric staff and postpartum women.
