Evaluating Effectiveness Of Psychosocial Rehabilitation On Patients With First-episode Of Schizophrenia

ObjectivesTo evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial rehabilitation on first-episode of schizophrenia with stable stageMethodsAn open, randomized and controlled study included 117 patients meeting CCMD-3 criteria for schizophrenia. Patients were randomly assigned to receive integrated treatment (antipsychotics combined psychosocial rehabilitation), or medication treatment (antipsychotics treatment only). The main outcome measures were the rate of treatment discontinuation, clinical symptoms, insight and compliance, quality of life, and social function.Result1. A total of 117 patients with schizophrenia were included in 12 months follow-up study,59 cases randomly assigned to integrated treatment and 58 cases to medication treatment.2. The rate of treatment discontinuation for any reason was significantly different between integrated treatment group and medication treatment group (28.8%vs.46.6%, P＜0.05); the rate of relapse had no significantly different between two groups (13.6%vs.22.4%, P>0.05); patients receiving integrated treatment improved adherence to treatment comparing with medication treatment.3. At the end of 12 months, patients receiving integrated treatment showed greater improvements from baseline compared with medication treatment in Insight Treatment Attitude Questionnaire (ITAQ) scores, Global Assessment Scale (GAS) scores and Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL) scores (allP-values<0.05).5. At the end of 12 months, patients receiving integrated treatment showed greater improvements from baseline compared with medication treatment in 2 domains of the MOS item short from health survey(SF-36) (general health and role-emotional, bothP-values<0.05).ConclusionPsychosocial rehabilitation improved clinical outcome, insight and adherence to treatment, quality of life and social function of patients with schizophrenia.
