Objective To evaluate the quality of life and the function of larynx after total laryngectomy of patients in Anhui province, China. To analyse the recovery differences of patients with different backgrounds and discuss the relevant risk factor, in order to propose the strategy.Methods We use general quality of life inventory and Larynx Function Questionaire After-Total-Laryngectomy to assess and score the quality of life of 75 patients with total laryngectomy and in 60 healthy people as controls. And we grouping the 75 patients with age, education status and environment of living, then we compare the quality of life and recovery of larynx function. We use Excel 2003 to data record and data collection, and calculate the score. And we use SPSS 13.0 to accomplish statistic analyse.Results 1. The quality of life of patients with total laryngectomy in phisical, mental and social function has significant lower than healthy people. In larynx function, the swallow and breath function of the patients is little worse than healthy people, whereas the speaking function is much worse. In total 75 patients, 39 of them has barely speaking function, they communicate with others by writing, gestures and lip-speaking. The rest of 36 patients, only 13 of them can communicate by speaking, 23 of them can speak short syllables with writing and gestures to communicate. In the 36 patients, 29 of them speaking with esophagus, 4 of them speaking after pronouncing reconstraction surgery, 3 of them use plastic larynx to pronouce. In the 29 patients which pronounce by esophagus, 24 of them did not take professional training, 5 of them take professional training. 2. patients who under 60 years old, take high school graduate, and live in the city have better quality of life in financial status, entertainment and mental function than those who are over 60 years old, did not complete high school education and living in the rural area. In th aspect of larynx function, patients under 60 years old, high school graduated and living in the city are much better than the others.Conclusion In Anhui province, the quality of life and the function of larynx in patients following total laryngectomy are not good, especially in pronounce function. Patients with different background had different quality of life and larynx function. We should realize the influence factors of quality of life and larynx function of patients with total laryngectomy, and improve the quality of life and larynx function of the patients through clinical interfere, social support, family support, self support and individual recovery instruction.
