Orthodontic pain arising from orthdontic treatment,is a major concern for parents, patients, and clinicians. And orthodontic pain could be the only reason for the paitients to suspend the treatment.The purpose of this study was to investigate the intensity and changing regularity of orthodontic pain within different time periods atter the application fo fixed appliance.Method:77 volunteer patients(median age 17.21 years, range 11-32 years, 55 female, 22 male)completed a questionnaire. In this research, the intencity of orthodontic pain was devided into 5 levels. The patients were required to record the pain level and their feeling(including gas pain, aching pain, gargalesthesia, spontaneous pain and pain at bite) once an hour during the week following insertion of the initial archwires.Results:the pain started 1 hour the earlest and 20 hours the latest after the insertion of the initial atchwires with an average of 3.8 hours and last for 2 days the shortest and 7 days the longest with an average of 4 days,and then gradually vanished.The average intencity of pain reached a peek level after 24 hours of the insertion. Most of the patients described thire discomfort as gas pain. Their was no significant difference in pain intensity between adults and children or between male and female or between different type of appliance.Conclusion:All 77 patients complained of pain in this reseach. Pain started after an average of 3.8 hours after the insertion of archwire, their two peeks along the pain intensity curve, the first started 4 hours after the insertion and last for 4 hours, while the second appeared at 24 hours after the insertion. Their was no significant difference in pain intensity in ages, sexes and different type of appliances.
