Objective1) By reviewing the related articles published in recent 10 years, we list the points that explain the mechanism for FD in both western medicine and Chinese medicine, and summarize the syndrome types for FD.2) According to preformed treatment and evaluation approaches, we identify the treatment effectiveness for FD with Chinese medicine.Methods1) literature reviews:By reviewing the related articles published in recent 10 years, we list the points that explain the mechanism for FD in both western medicine and Chinese medicine, and summarize the syndrome types for FD.2) clinical study:Accorded to preformed treatment, patients who satisfy all of the diagnostic criteria, inclusion and exclusion criteria were treated with Chinese medicine for 4 weeks. The data of single syndrome score, total syndromes score, SF-36 score, HAMA and HAMD score were collected before and after the intervention respectively. The data were analyzed by Paired-Samples T Test and nonparametric test etc. with SPSS13.0.Results1) As for FD, many views for the disease reasons, disease mechanisms, and treatment in Chinese medicine theory were identified.2) In the clinical study,30 patients satisfied all the criteria and were enrolled in the analysis. Of these,12 and 18 patients were diagnosed as cold-heat complex pattern and syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and stomach respectively. Except for social functioning in SF-36, the other scores all had significant changes after accepted Chinese medicine in the whole 30 patients, and especially, patients with syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and stomach. Meanwhile, total syndromes score, epigastric pain score, epigastric burning score, postprandial fullness score, early satiation score, some domains score in SF-36 (Role limitations due to physical health, Role limitations due to emotional problems, Pain, Health change), HAMA and HAMD score had significant changes in patients with cold-heat complex pattern except for Physical functioning, Energy/fatigue, Emotional well being, Social functioning and General health in SF-36. All the scores had nonsignificant difference between cold-heat complex pattern group and syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and stomach group in the basic-line, the similar phenomenon also occurred after the intervention except for total syndromes score and General health score in SF-36.Conclusions1)Many literature views and clinical experience for the disease reasons, disease mechanisms, and treatment of FD in Chinese medicine theory were identified.2)Chinese medicine can improve the outcomes of FD in cold-heat complex pattern and syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and stomach, especially, the latter one.3)Chinese medicine can improve the syndromes of FD.4)Chinese medicine can improve the quality of life of patients with FD, such as Role limitations due to physical health, Role limitations due to emotional problems, Pain, Health change, Physical functioning, Energy/fatigue, Emotional well being and General health, except for Social functioning.5) Chinese medicine can improve the anxiety-depression syndrome of patients with FD.6) The effect of Chinese medicine on patients with the other syndrome types and Social functioning needed further studies.
