| Objectives To describe the self-care agency and the quality of life in patients with asthma. To find out the relationship between the self-care agency and quality of life. To explore the effects of self-care education on self-care agency and the quality of life in patient with asthma.Methods The study used an experimental design. The 80 patients who came from the outpatient department of the Binzhou Medical College Hospital from Feb.,2007 to Feb.,2008 were randomly allocated to a control or intervention group. The patients in the control group received routine nursing care. The intervention group received self-care education which included improvement of self-care ability, self-care responsibility, self-esteem and health knowledge. The intervention time was two months. Five questionnaires were used for data collection:a general information sheet of patients, the exercise of Self-care Agency (ESCA), The Short Form 36 (SF-36), The Adults Asthma Quality of Life questionnaires(AQLQ) and The asthma knowledge questionnaires. SPSS 12.0 was used to analyze the data.Results 1. Self-care agency scores of all patients was 105.10 d±14.90. Factors that can influence significantly self-care agency, used by Linear Regression, were educational level, residential region,day symptom and family relationship.2. Quality of life scores of all patients was 170.85±29.86.66.2% patients perceived a middle level of quality of life.3. Findings from the present study revealed that there are a significant positive relationship between the self-care agency and quality of life in patients with asthma (r=0.40, P=0.01).4. Self-care education improved self-care agency significantly (P<0.05).5. Self-care educaiton were significantly improved asthma quality (P<0.05).Conclusions Self-care agency influence quality of life in patients with asthma. Self-care education could improve the self-care agency, enhance quality of life.
