| Objective To investigate the health literacy status and its influencing factors of residents in Fujian, and to provide scientific basis for developing strategies of health literacy. Methods A multi-stage stratified sampling method was used to select the sample population in the eleven areas (including five cities and six countries) of Fujian, about 4701 adults aged 15-69 years old. The health literacy indexes were used to evaluate the health literacy status and analyze its influencing factors. Results The samples were 4701 persons, the valid questionnaires were 4692 and the effective recovery rate was 99.81%. About 5.50% residents of our province have the health literacy, the rate of the health literacy of residents including basic knowledge and attitudes, health lifestyles and behaviors, basic health skills were 11.7%,6.17%,13.5% respectively. There were significantly different among the different education, sex, local and genders(P<0.05 or P<0.01). the rate of the health literacy of residents including health conception, the prevention of infection , the prevention of chronic, the safety and the first aid, the basic medical treatment were 29.1%, 10.3%, 3.98%,17.8%, 5.68% respectively. Education, ages and etc. were found as the main factors of affecting population health literacy (P<0.05 or P<0.01) by using Logistic regression analysis. Conclusion The level of health literacy of our province was low. We should develop health education and health promotion strategies on health literacy promotion according to the characteristics of populations.
