Objective To assess Chongqing Banan residents’ health literacy levels and influencing factors, so to provide a scientific basis for health decisions for the government and The family planning administrative department of public health. Methods Chongqing Banan residents between the age of 15 and 69 were selected by multi-stage, stratified and cluster random sampling and were surveyed by questionnaires. Results The overall level of Chongqing Banan residents’ health literacy level was 12.1%, with the literacy of basic knowledge and concepts being 16.7%, the literacy of healthy lifestyle and behaviors being 20.8%, and the literacy of basic skills being 12.9%. The health issue-related literacy level of the resident ware as follows: scientific health understanding(41.3%), infectious disease prevention(28.8%), chronic disease prevention(7.5%), safety and first aid(47.1%), basic healthcare(17.1%), health information(9.2%). Residents smoking rate was 29.6%. Logistic regression analysis showed that cultural degree(OR = 3.307), smoking status(OR = 1.969) affected the region’s residents health literacy level. Conclusion Banan residents have a low levelof health literacy and high smoking rate. It is need to focus on the key populations, like rural areas, low level of education or smoking populations and chronic disease prevention or other key health issues, establishing scientific, reasonable and effective health publicity and education. Through the comprehensive intervention, improving residents’ basic health knowledge and skills and promoting the formation of healthy lifestyles and behaviors.
