Objective To explore the correlation between S100A8/A9 and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods Fasting plasma S100A8/A9 was measured in 127 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) group and 36 cases of normal control group by using enzyme-liked immunosorbent assay. Glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), body mass index (BMI), systolic biood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP), totle cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C), high sensitive c-reactive protein (hsCRP) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were also measured in fasting status and the age was recorded. We detected the IMT of all subjects by color doppler ultrasonography. T2DM group were divided into atherosclerosis group and nonatherosclerosis group according to IMT and the normal control group had neither intimal thickening nor plaque. Statistical analyses were performed with the use of SPSS16.0 software. We studied the changes of plasma S100A8/A9 in different groups and its association with other clinic indexes. We also studied the changes of IMT in different groups and its association with other clinic indexes. Moreover, we assessed the correlation between S100A8/A9 and IMT.Resuts (1) Plasma S100A8/A9 was significantly higher in T2DM group than normal control group (P<0.01). And atherosclerosis group was significantly higher than nonatherosclerosis group (P<0.01). Pearson correlation analyses showed that S100A8/A9 was positively correlated with LDL-C, hsCRP, IL-6. (2) IMT was significantly higher in T2DM group than normal control group (P<0.01). Pearson correlation analyses showed IMT was positively corrrlated with age, HbA1c, SBP, LDL-C, hsCRP, IL-6. (3) Pearson correlation analyses showed that S100A8/A9 was positively correlated with IMT(P<0.01). (4) Multiple linear regression analyses showed that S100A8/A9 was independently associated with IMT (P<0.001).Conclusion There is an association between S100A8/A9 and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
