BackgroundRefractory asthma is a common and refractory respiratory disease, although it has been recognized long ago. In spite of the great progress and achievements on asthma since the implementation of the International GIAN program, how to prevent asthma, how to reduce asthma relapse, the treatment of severe asthma, and steroid-dependent asthma medical treatment are still difficulties in medical. There is a wealth of knowledge in Traditional Chinese medicine about asthma. The described of asthma symptoms can be found in the medical classic of the yellow emperor. Ancient physicians had a wealth of records, on name of asthma, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention aspects of health care. So far many theories and prescriptions are still widely used in clinical. So far, there are many scholars dedicating to the collation of asthma literature and they made remarkable achievements. However, there was no describe on prescription as a focal point and study the regular on prescriptions of asthma, combining with analysis of documentary research and statistical knowledge. There were vast seas of ancient documents about asthma, we chose to study document from the Ming and Qing Dynasties for its easier for literature collection and collation. The first period of this subject is to study the law on prescription of asthma in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and was hope to find some guidance for modern clinical Traditional Chinese Medicine and screening new drugs.ObjectivesTo study the rule of syndrome differentiation and treatment of asthma during the Ming and Qing Dynasties by analysis and research the prescription of bronchial asthma of Chinese medical literature, and hope to provide the basis of literature study for future clinical studies, and to reflect the guidance and service for clinical.MethodsTo search the database " Encyclopaedia Of TCM " for Ming and Qing Dynasties medical books; using key word asthma. Retrieval from asthma prescriptions to establish a database of descriptive and cluster summary analysis, obtained the rule of syndrome differentiation of asthma during this period.Result284 prescriptions were included through the search. During Ming and Qing dynasties, doctors used mainly seven types of drugs to cure asthma, they were expectorants, antitussives and drugs for relieving dyspnea, reinforcing drugs, drugs for relieving exterior syndrome, Qi-regulating Drugs, heat-clearing drug, diuretics for eliminating dampness and drugs for arresting discharge. They used mainly in warm drugs and peaceful drugs, the frequency of use of warm drugs is about twice of the use of cool drugs. Used reinforcing drugs mainly in qi-tonifying medicinal, accounting for 67.66%, and mainly in lung and spleen meridians.ConclusionBy prescription research, we evolved the knowledge of asthma in Ming and Qing Dynasties as follows. The pathogenesis of asthma was deficiency of organs, phlegm-fluid retention, depression and stagnation of qi movement, cause of exogenous contraction. The deficiency of organs were mainly in deficiency of Qi in lung and spleen. The phlegm-fluid retention was mainly in cold phlegm-fluid. The cause of exogenous contraction is mainly in cold pathogen. Asthma treatment principle is treating both manifestation and root cause of disease. The cough and asthma, regulating qi-flowing for eliminating phlegm, strengthening resistance to relieve exterior syndrome and strengthening vital qi to eliminate pathogenic factor are mainly treatment of asthma; the clearing heat, eliminating dampness and diuresis, astringing lung for relieving asthma are adjuvant therapy. Considering the limits of the historical conditions and the understanding of asthma at that time, physicians used less blood-activation drugs, indicating their limitations in blood stasis syndrome of asthma in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
