Objective:To study the efficacy, recurrence rate and adverse reaction of the combined treatment of TCM and paroxetine for depression. Methods:This was a randomized, open-label,1 year study.60 depressants, treated by paroxetine for 12 weeks, were randomly assigned to the treatment group with paroxetine 20-50mg and TCM based on syndrome-differentiating per day or the control group with paroxaetine 20-50mg per day. Clinical efficacy was evaluated by total scores of HAMD-24 as well as reduced rate of HAMD-24, and adverse reaction was assessed with TESS and laboratory examination.Results:1. There were 3 cases of control group drop-off and 2 cases of treatment group drop-off when the study was off. Thus it was 55 patients completed the study.2. At the pretreatment and the beginning of study, the total score of HAMD-24 of two groups accorded with normal distribution by the normality test. And there were no statistical differences (P>0.05) between two groups in the general dates, included gender, age, degree of education, psychiatric history, family history of mental disease, period of disease, the total HAMD-24 score at pretreatment and the beginning of study. The distribution of TCM syndrome type in two groups had no statistical differences (P>0.05).3. In the control group, there were no statistical differences (P>0.05) between the total HAMD-24 score of pretreatment and after half a year of study start point, and between the total HAMD-24 scores of pretreatment and after a year of study start point. As well as the treatment group.4. After half a year of study start point, there was no statistical difference (P>0.05) between the total HAMD-24 score of two groups. After a year of study start point, the total HAMD-24 score of treatment group was 7.21±5.53, while control group was 10.70±6.82. There were significantly differences between two groups (P<0.05).5. After half a year of study start point, the remission rate of treatment group was 50.0%, while control group was 44.4%.It was no significantly difference two groups. After a year of study start point, the remission rate of treatment group was 57.1%, while control group was 29.6%.It was significantly differences between two groups.6. After a year of the study start point, the recurrence rate of treatment group was 12.29%, while control group was 41.67%, which was no significant difference from the former (P>0.05)7. It was similar to the kind of adverse reactions between two groups. But the severity of adverse reactions in treatment group was lighter than that in control group, which had significant difference(P<0.05).'Conclusion:It is safe and effective to treat depression by TCM and paroxetine. It has long time efficiency and it can prevent recurrence. Compared with paroxetine, its remission rate is higher, adverse reaction is lighter, and it is tended to lower recurrence rate.
