There is a tight relationship between anterior teeth morphology and aesthetics. A large number of survey results revealed that there were considerable differences among different regions and ethnics about teeth morphology. However, existing data which are regarded as guidance in the textbook were investigated by Wang Huifang in 1959. She surveyed the extracted teeth of the people who lived in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province. The stomatologists have been prompted to improve the oral teeth morphology data and to enable patients to be more significantly attractive because of the development of the new materials and technologies, the rapid accelerating process of Chinese population aging, the average life expectancy, as well as aesthetic growth in demand. Many factors could influence the aesthetics of anterior teeth, such as teeth shape, color and arrangement. If we view the general population directly from anterior, the characteristics of dental morphology have been reported rarely.Incisal embrasures, located in maxillary anterior teeth incisal 1/3, were the exposure areas when the patients spoke and smiled. But the specific size and characteristics of Chinese people have not been reported yet. These parameters could affect the patients'aesthetic appearances. Because the worn teeth were one of the characteristics of aging dentition, the incisal embrasures should decrease or even lost. These results were inevitable. Therefore, how to make the patients look younger would have to be taken into consideration. In addition, there were rarely reported about the characteristics of the length and width of no worn anterior clinical teeth crown viewed directly from anterior. There should be a value or range which was considered reasonable for the observers. This value or range would guide clinical treatment. This study would fill this gap. The results could avoid errors, increase clinical aesthetic effect, reduce disputes between doctors and patients, and enhance the confidence of patients and the trust on the stomatologists. Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate parameters of in the incisal embrasures and unworn anterior teeth of people aged 16 to 18 years. Materials and Methods:107 gypsum casts of the maxillary anterior teeth of juvenile of Jilin Province comprised the intervention group, including 48 male and 59 female. The incisal embrasure measured was a triangular-shaped space with the apex at the contact point of 2 adjacent incisors and the base angles at the points at which the incisal curvature flattened into a straight incisal plane. Embrasures between the canine and lateral incisors, between the lateral and central incisors, and between the 2 central incisors were measured. The width and length of clinical crowns were measured, too. The cast was positioned in a surveyor. The embrasure was photographed using a digital camera (Canon 450D) fixed on a tripod 10 cm from the base of the surveyor. Height adjustment between the center of the camera lens and the measured incisal embrasure was accomplished by adjustment of the tripod screw. The images were downloaded to a computer (Dell inspiration1400) to measure the area in mm2 of each incisal embrasure by image analyzing software (PHOTOSHOP). Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 17.0 software.Results:1. The incisal embrasures areas between the canine and lateral incisor, between the lateral and central incisors, and between the 2 central incisors were 4.01±0.97mm2, 2.34±0.87mm2, 1.55±0.60mm2 respectively. The areas of incisal embrasures increased gradually from front to back, along with no statistical significance in terms of left and right. In addition to the area of incisal embrasures between the maxillary lateral incisor and canine, the rest were no statistical significance in the terms of gender.2. The length and width of the central incisor were 11.7±0.70mm and 8.6±0.33mm respectively; the length and width of the lateral incisor were 10.4±1.08mm and 5.7±0.21mm respectively; and the length and width of the canine were 11.2±0.77mm and 4.6±0.17mm respectively. The length of the central incisor, lateral incisor and canine were greater than the length of Wang Huifang; and due to the observation directly from the anterior, the lateral incisor and canine width decreased, the width of central incisor kept the same. In addition to lateral incisor clinical crown length, there was no statistical significance in the terms of gender. Conclusion:1.This experiment filled a gap about incisal embrasures of maxillary anterior teeth.2.There was statistical significance in the terms of gender about the length of lateral incisors and the incisal embrasures between lateral incisors and canines.
