Current Situation Of Health Education In A Tumor Hospital Of Yunnan Province

Objectives: To understand the current status of health education amongst cancer patients in Yunnan Province Hospital, to explore the factors which influence the delivery of health education in the hospital setting, to utilize this data to create and subsequently present some effective proposals which may provide the basis for an informed and effective hospital health education pattern.Subjects and Methods: This research uses the cross-sectional survey design to collect data by qualitative and quantitative methods. Structured questionnaires were completed by 234 patients and 130 doctors and nurses; some of the patients participated in qualitative interviews, while some doctors, nurses and managers participated in a group interview. Part of this research focuses on the demand for and attitude towards hospital health education amongst patients. The other portion of this research is focused on how hospital health education is carried out by doctors and nurses, as well as the exploration of factors which influence these education activities.Results and Findings: (1) At present, health education activities have been implemented according to the hospital's plan, and have won some initial successes but the hospital lacks a comprehensive health education model; (2) Patients acquire some knowledge of some tumor prevention and cure; their health belief and health behavior take form gradually; their demands for health education also increase; (3) Hospital health education is not delivered by professional and dedicated staff, therefore the burden falls on doctors and nurses which results in ineffective delivery; (4) The managers in the hospital and other higher authorities do not direct enough support or funding towards health education.Conclusion: Improve all hospital staff's understanding of the significance of hospital health education; strengthen managerial support and funding towards hospital health education; explore a hospital health education pattern consistent with the hospital reality; structure an efficient health education network; carry out a systematic and standardized hospital health education program; do target-oriented individual health education to patients to meet their health needs, improve their understanding of the disease, improve their adherence to treatment, promote their recovery and raise their quality of life.
