The Therapeutic Effect Of Nourishing The Liver And Kidney And Removing Blood Stasis On Osteoarthritis Of The Knee

Osteoarthritis of the knee(KOA) is a chronic and clinically prevalent disease.It belongs to the class of disease known as " Bi Zhen".While it is quite similar to the Fong its etological causes are complex and closely link to age,sex,hereditary,joint damage, joint disease,the weather and food causative factors.Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease that affects both the middle age and aging population health.It is comparatively equivalent to the Chinese Medical regime of "Gu Bi" or knee pain;Its pathogenesis is characterized by primary or secondary articular cartilage degeneration with hyperplasia of the bone under the cartilage.The main clinical expressions are knee pain tumidness,and the limitation of the joint movement.The cause and pathogenesis are not completely clear.Currently,medical treatment have not been really effective other than the replacement of the knee experienced by a few patients. However there have been reports that prove that Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment had achieved good results.The treatment concept is focused on simultaneously treatment, with main emphasis on the root whilst continuously catering to the branch.According to a local " Hua Sen" Report,the Singapore population is aging rapidly and is expected to become significant in the coming 10 to 15 years.Additionally,in the coming 15 to 20 years,the aging population above 65 years of age is expected to hit 20%. The current population age 65 years and above is about 10%.As the population age,the clinical observation is that a large proportion of those seeking medical consultation is due to Osteoarthritis of the primary degeneration type.KOA as a clinically prevalent and chronic disease that affects the patients over a prolong period,and has become a hot topic of medical research.Many experts had carried out extensive research on the cause,pathogenesis,types and treatment methods.The research findings have produced encouraging results.The research described herein is to understand the characteristics of Osteoarthritis in Singapore,and study the effectiveness and mechanism of Traditional Chinese medicine treatment against the human knee degeneration with age.60 subjects with KOA characteristics will be examined during the research.Objective:Observe the therapeutic effect of nourishing the Liver and Kidney and removing blood stasis on KOA.Methods:60 cases of KOA will be divided randomly into two groups,one curing group and the other,a control group of 30 each.The curing group will be prescribed with Bu Shen Tong Luo Fang(powder prescription),twice daily,orally consuming once in the morning and once at night.The control group is prescribed with Spur Relieving capsules, thrice daily.The course of treatment will be for two months and the symptoms and physical signs observed before and after treatment to determine the treatment effectiveness.Results:Practical Observation of the treatment of the curing group of 30 show 1 case under control,20 cases significantly effective,9 cases effective and 0 case non- effective.The controlled and significantly effective rate is 70.00%,and the culmulative effective rate is 100%.In the control group,the treatment produced 0 case under control, 22 cases significantly effective,6 cases effective and 2 cases non- effective.The controlled and significantly effective rate is 73.3%and culmulative effective rate is 93.3%.In comparison,there is a significant difference between the treatment of the curing and the control group(P＜0.05);The curing group demonstrated that the symptoms,and physical changes in conditions prior and after treatment is also statistically significant(P＜0.05).The curing group in comparison to the control group is superior to the control group in its effects in the relieve of the knee pain,pressure pain,and lumbago symptoms.Conclusions:The basic pathogenesis of KOA is deficiency of liver and kidney, blood stasis.In accordance with the principles of simultaneous treatment of the root and the branch,elimination and reinforcement,tonifying the liver and kidney and clearing blood stasis is effective in alleviating the symptoms and physical conditions in KOA,resulting in a effective traditional Chinese medicine method of treatment.
