Objective To investigate the value and accuracy of preoperative templating for total hip arthroplasty. Methods 30 unilateral total hip arthroplasties were undergone from March to December of 2008 ,age range was from 42 to 85 years, mean 56 years. Templating was done preoperatively with LINK?Preop PlanTM. The sizes planned preoperatively was compared with actual those used postoperatively due to anticipate the size of components and evaluate the discrepancy of limb length. Results The predicted sizes of components correlated well with the actual ones. The variations in cup within one size was in 27 (90%), and the variations in stem within one size was in 28 (93.3%). There was no statistically significant difference between cemented and cementlss stems. The discrepancy of limb length from radiology is 9.0±8.5mm( 0~37mm) preoperatively, compared with 1.1±2.4mm( 0~6mm) postoperatively. Conclusion Preoperative planning is significant to achieve an excellent result of THA. Accurate and careful preoperative templating is of advantage to anticipate the size of components and correct leg length discrepancy.
