Objective: To investigate the expression of the aromatase P450 in breast hypertrophy and discuss its significance. Methods: By calculating the volume of the breast, asking about the disease history, preoperative check-up, and pathological examination after operation, we devide the cases which satisefied our inclusion standard into two groups: breast hypertrophy group and normal breast group. The breast tissues cut off during the operation were then used to test the expression of aromatase P450 by SP immunohistochemistry, in which were 28 cases of breast hypertrophy and 12 cases of normal breast. Results: The rate of the positive expression in mammary hypertrophy group was 39.29%, while there was no the positive expression in the normal breast group. Clearly, there was obvious significant between the two groups in a statistics basis (P<0.05). We also made further efforts to investigate the expression of aromatase P450 in the breast tissue between the patients who have lactated and who have not. In addition, we also tested the expression of aromatase P450 in the breat tissue according to the different extent of breast hypertrophy and mastoptosis. There were no positive results in the above conditions. Conclusions: There was overexpression of aromatase P450 within mammary gland in breast hypertrophy. So increased expression of aromatase may be involved in the occurrence of breast hypertrophy. Furthermore, we have found that the overexpression of aromatase P450 may not be related with lactation, or influnce the extent of breast hypertrophy and mastoptosis.
