Study Of Protestant Women Medical Missionaries' Activities In China In Late Ch'ing Dynasty And Early Republica Of China

Women medical missionaries,as a special group of missionaries, were qualified to practice medicine in the Women's liberation movement of west society,and then were spread to China,a country with special custom,by the affection of fanatical religious movements.The ultimate aim of Women medical missionaries in China is to spread Christianity and practice medicine as intermedium of missionary activities.However, their activities were not merely restricted to missionary and medicine work when face to the social reality.As disseminators of Western Learning,they introduced modern Western medicine and hospital system to China;and actively engaged in women's medicine,nurses,and midwives education and found the earliest medicine and care institution to meet the need of medicine practice.In addition,they witnessed the quo ofChinese society and carried on the activities of improving social custom,such as,liberating women's feet,quitting Opium,etc.The research for the activities of Women medical missionaries in Late Qing Dynasty can deepen the studying medical missionary history,medical education history in China,and Chinese women's history.The paper is divided into five parts to study the Women medical missionary activities in China.Chapterâ… analyzes internal background of female medical missionaries and changes in western society,and then introduces the development of missionary work,dilemma of Chinese women medical and health and desire of female missionary.Chapterâ…¡gives the analysis for the constitution of Women medical missionaries in China in three levels,including the source and number of this group,the spatial and temporal distribution,and their own quality and role etc. Chapterâ…¢,the focus of this paper,will introduce Women medical missionary's medical activities,medical education,and their efforts for improvement social habits.Chapterâ…£is devoted to study the religious activities of Women medical missionaries in China.Chapterâ…¤analyzes the impact brought by female medical missionaries' activity for Chinese society.
