Chemiluminescence (CL) is the luminescent phenomena and can be defined as the light emission produced by a chemical reaction. It has become one of the most attractive analytical methods due to its high sensitivity, wide calibration ranges, high sample throughput, simple instrument, rapid analytical speed and ease of operation. The use of flow injection chemiluminescence to determine a wide variety of compounds, including pharmaceuticals, biomolecules, antioxidants, illicit drugs, pesticides and pollutants. In this paper the CL detection with flow injection technique has been applied in pharmaceuticals. The major content was described as follows:1. Flow injection chemiluminescence determination of tramadol and benzhexol hydrochlorideTwo novel chemiluminescence (CL) methods for the determination of tramadol or benzhexol have been developed by combining the flow injection technique and its sensitizing effect on the weak CL reaction between sulfite and strong oxidants such as potassium permanganate, Ce(IV) in acid media. The mechanisms for the CL reaction have been proposed on the basis of UV and CL spectra. The proposed method are simple and sensitive and have been applied to the determination of tramadol hydrochloride in injections and benzhexol hydrochloride in teblets with satisfactory results.2. Determination of carbidopa by flow injection Chemiluminescence methodBased on the fact that the reaction of carbidopa with KMnO4 in sulfuric acid medium could be produced chemiluminescence, a new flow injection chemiluminescence method for the determination of carbidopa was established. This method is simple, convenient and sensitive. It has been successfully applied to the determination of carbidopa in carbidopa tablets.
