Objective: To understand the status of hypertension prevalence, awareness, treatment and the knowledge on hypertension prevention and control, and to explore the influential factors of hypertension among rural adults of Hui nationality in Midong district XingJiang. This will be helpful for providing scientific evidences for population based intervention for hypertension. Methods: A survey was made among the population of Hui and Han nationality in Changshanzi town of Midong district from the May of 2007 to the September of 2007, using the method of stratifiedcluster sampling.A total of 1821 adults, aged 18 and over, were examined, and the effective adults were 1800.Hui nationality 845(412 males and 433 females); Han nationality955 (486 males and 469 females). Three blood pressure measurements were obtained by trained observers by use of astandardized mercury sphygmomanometer after a 5-minuter sitting rest. Information on history of hypertension and use of antihypertensive medications was obtained by use of a standard questionnaire. Chi-squarewas used to compare the rates;t-test and analysis of variance were used to test the differences of numerical variables. The independent risk factors for influencing prevalence were analyzed by using logistic regression analysis. Results:Overall,29.28% of the population of Hui and Han nationality had hypertension, among which, Hui nationality prevalence was 31.95%,and Han nationality prevalence was 26.91%,which were different between them(P<0.05).The prevalence rate of hypertension was increased with the increasing of the age in both Hui nationality and Han nationality.Overall, 64.44% Hui nationality of those with hypertension were aware of their diagnosis, 57.78% were taking medication to lower their blood pressure, and 10.37% achieved blood pressure control;58.37%Han nationality of those with hypertension were aware of their diagnosis, 49.81% were taking medication to lower their blood pressure, and 15.18% achieved blood pressure control. According to multi-factors logistic regression analysis, age,salt(≥6g/d), family history, overweight and obesity were the risk factors of hypertension. Conclusions:The results indicate that the hypertension prevalence of Hui nationality is rising, and is higher than the hypertension prevalence of Han nationality. Hypertension awareness, treatment and control was higher than the national average leval in 2002. Compared with Europe and USA,there was a distinct gap. Hypertension has something with the increasing of the age,salt(≥6g/d),familyhistory,overweight and obesity. Controling salt and weight is the important measure of hypertension prevention and treatment in this district. The study is the base for further intervention of hypertension epidemiology.
