Objective: To investigate the expression of Survivin and VEGF in cholangiocarcinoma and explore its relation to clinicobiological behavior. Methods: Immunohistochemical techique was adopted in detecting the Survivin and VEGF expression in cholangiocarcinoma and normal bile duct tissues. 51 cases of cholangiocarcinoma collected in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from January 2003 to December 2005 were taken into the test group, and 10 cases of normal bile duct tissue as control group. Results: (1) The expression of Survivin in cholangiocarcinoma was 74.5%, whereas in normal bile duct tissue was 0%, the difference was significant(P<0.01). The expression of Survivin in cholangiocarcinoma was not significantly associated with sex, age, tumor differentiation, tumor location and lymph node metastasis (P>0.05). (2)The expression of VEGF in cholangiocarcinoma was 80.4%, whereas in normal bile duct tissue was 10%, the difference was significant(P<0.01). The expression of VEGF in cholangiocarcinoma was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis(P<0.05) but not with sex, age, tumor differentiation, tumor location(P>0.05) .The VEGF expression in group with lymph node metastasis was higher than that of group without lymph node metastasis. (3)The expression of both Survivin and VEGF, in the same sample was 70.6%, which was closely correlated. Conclusions: Survivin and VEGF may play a pivotal role in tumorigenesis, tumor progression, infiltration and metastasis of cholangiocarcinoma, and have intimate relation in angiogenesis. Therefore they will provide new approach of diagnosis and targeted therapy.
