Objective: A targeted mental health education is enforced to type 2 diabetes patients in hospital. To discuss the role of mental health education on the improvement of the quality of life. Probe a rational health education scheme to improve the quality of life for the type 2 diabetes patients. Methods: The patients were randomized to education group or control group. The control group was trained with conventional therapies. The educational group received in addition to mental health therapies, taking the form of group and individual treatment. The changes which include in fasting plasma glucose (FPG),two hour plasma glucose(2hPG),and the scale of DSQL , SF-36 ,SCL-90, were measured. All measures were taken in Shanxi provincial people's hospital at the time from June to October in 2007.The intervention regards 5 times 2 weeks as a Circle, a new patient is admitted to join it at any time. At the end of the test 95 patients were selected. The number of control group is 48,and that of educational group is 47.Results: It has no significance between the two groups in all dimensions before the therapies. In DSQL the difference has significance in the psychological dimension, social dimension and total scores (P<0.01). In SF-36 the difference of social function dimension , emotional functions dimension and health status dimension has significance(P<0.01).In SCL-90 the difference of the scores in depression(P<0.01), anxiety(P<0.01), hostility(P<0.05) dimensions has significance. The difference of the positive symptom share(P<0.05) and the numbers of positive symptom(P<0.01) has significance, too. After the therapies the education group'scores of DSQL are dropped in the psychological dimension and social dimension(P<0.01). The education group's SCL-90 total scores, and the scores in depression, anxiety, hostility dimensions decline significantly (P<0.05).,the positive symptom share is decline significantly,too(P<0.01). In SF-36 the education group'scores are increased in the Social function dimension (P<0.01) and Emotional functions dimension (P<0.05). The control group'scores are changed at a backward way in some dimensions, but it has no significance (P>0.05).The factor of depression and anxiety in SCL-90 is correlated to the total score of the DSQL and most of dimensions in DSQL.There is no interaction between time and transaction to the FBG and 2hPBG by the repeated measurement analysis. Conclusion: Mental health education in hospital can improve the patient's quality of life from the psychological dimension and social dimension . It can palliate the depression and anxiety of DM patients remarkably. It is essential to enforce the health education in hospital.
