Objective To study the status and epidemiological characteristics of health risk behaviors among adolescents in three cities of Fujian, China. To explore the influence factors on substance abuse, psychological dependence and suicidal ideation, and investigate the personality on those who have substance abuse, psychological dependence and suicidal ideation. To provide the basis for the intervention measures.Methods A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among 10235 students from 32 middle schools, professional schools and universities in Fuzhou, Ningde and Sanming, in Fujian,China by using a stratified cluster random sampling method. The questionnaire titled"Survey on health relative behaviors of adolescents"was conducted , in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of China. Totally 209 senior middle school students in Grade one from four middle schools in Nanping were selected by cluster sampling method. They were investigated with the questionnaire titled"Survey on health relative behaviors of adolescents"and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) at the same time. EpiData 3.1 and SPSS 11.5 and 13.0 packages were used for data analyzing.Results The prevalence of current smoking, current alcohol use and heavy drinking was 9.7% ,24.9% and 10.9%. 7.4% of students had ever used sedative or hypnotic drug without the doctor's permission. The prevalence of bicycle ride violation and physical fight was 38.1% and 19.9% respectively. 9.0% of students had been to non-swimming area. 19.3% of students drank soda water once or more a day, 30.9% of them ate sweet food once or more a day. 26.5% of students no breakfast. 36.4% of students have food preferences; 57.2% of them did physical exercise less than one hour per day, three days per week. The prevalence of students with depression was 13.4%; The rate of suicidal ideation was 15.4%, and The prevalence of internet addiction was 7.7%. There were significant differences among the subjects in gender, school type and area. The prevalence of male students and students in poor school performance was high in many kinds of health risk behaviors. The current smoking and current drinking students' P scores of EPQ were significantly high and L scores of EPQ were relatively low. P scores and N scores of EPQ in the groups of suicide ideation and internet addiction were significantly high and L scores of EPQ were significantly low. It has been found that some family, social and mental factors were associated with health risk behaviors of the adolescents.Conclusions There are high prevalence of some kinds of health risk behaviors among students in Fujian. Some family, social and mental factors are associated with the adolescents' health risk behaviors. Psycho-hygiene, health education and life skills education should be conducted according to the characteristics of different schools and gender,in order to prevent and control their health risk behaviors.
