Objective: Because of the important role that the insulin resistant reaction played in the occurrence and progression of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus, Soluble CD36 (sCD36) has been proposed to be related to insulin resistance. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the level of plasma sCD36 in different glucose metabolic conditions and its association with metabolic indexes, i.e. insulin resistance index (IR), malondialdehyde (MDA), body mass index (BMI).Methods: 20 health control subjects with normal fasting blood glucose and 2-hour blood glucose (NFG), 20 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), 22 with isolated impaired glucose tolerance (i-IGT), 23 with both impaired fasting and 2-hour blood glucose tolerance (c-IGT), and 20 with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus (NDM) were enrolled in the study. Plasma sCD36 was determined with a commercial ELISA kit, plasma insulin with radioimmunoassay, and plasma MDA with a colorimetric method. IR was calculated using minimal model of homeostasis (HOMA-IR= (FPG×FINS)/22.5). Statistics was performed with SPSS 13.0 software. Quantitive data were expressed as x±SD and compared by ANOVA; Differences between groups were analyzed by SNK-q test, Correlation analysis were done by linear correlation analysis. Two-sided P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: (1) sCD36 levels were 1.67±0.60 in NFG, 2.60±1.05 in IFG, 1.91±0.82 in i-IGT, 2.55±1.09 in c-IGT, and 2.57±0.78 in NDM, respecti- vely (the values were expressed in relative units). Compared with NFG group, sCD36 levels in NDM group and the IFG group were significant higher (P<0.05), there were no significant difference among the impaired glucose regulation groups (P>0.05). (2) Correlation analysis showed that sCD36 was positively associated with MDA and IR (P<0.05), but was not with BMI (P>0.05).Conclusion: (1) Increased sCD36 was found in IFG, c-IGT, and NDM. (2) The increase in sCD36.was associated with insulin resistance and oxidative stress rather than obesity.
