Objective:To explore the characteristic of electromyography(EMG)of tensor veli palatini(TVP)in adult patients with otitis media. Methods:Twenty Secretory otitis media(SOM)and 20 Chronic suppurative otitis media(SCM)patients, age ranging from 17 to 65,were studied. All of the patients were examed by Tubo tymanoaerodynamic graphy(TTAG);the ear and orifice of Eustachian tube(ET)was examed and took a picture through nasopharygoscope after the nasal decongested and topically anesthetized; Then a specially designed concentric needle electrode was inserted into bilateral TVP mediated by nasopharygoscope. When the patients perform a series actions of liquid swllowing, the EMG of TVP was recorded and then analyzed subsequently.Results:1.The motor unit potential(MUP)duration and contraction lasting time of diseased ear in SOM group, diseased ear in SCM group, healthy ear in SCM group is less than that of controll group(p<0.01).No statistically significant differences were found in the contration peak amplitude's and MUP amplitude's comparision between the three groups mentioned above and control group.2.Abnormal EMG appearance to be short MUP duration, low amplitude and pathological interference pattern or mixed pattern. The frequency of abnormal EMG of diseased ear in SOM group is 31.43%(11/35 ear),higher than that of diseased ear in SCM group(22.73%,5/22 ear).Diffenrence of them is not significant(p>0.05).3.Within the diseased ear in SOM group, more abnormal EMG is found in the patients with crack-shape of ET orifice(52.9%,9/17 ear)other than in that of the other group(11.1%,2/18 ear),p<0.01.Conclusion:1.Abnormal EMG indicating TVP contratile dysfunction was found in adult patients of SOM and SCM.2. Abnormal EMO of TVP in adult SOM group properly correlates with crack-shape of ET orifice.
