Objective To observe the clinical effect on treatment of primary dysmenorrhea of acupuncture cyclic sequential therapy in order to provide a therapeutic scheme of persistent and exact curative effect for clinical application. Methods 70 patients of cold-damp type were randomly divided into two groups as a treatment group (n=35) and a control group (n=35) . They were treated with acupuncture cyclic sequential therapy in the treatment group and with traditional acupuncture therapy in the control group. The average scores of VAS, scores of dysmenorrhea symptoms and TCM symptoms were investigated before the treatment and after the whole course of treatment. And the recurrent numbers were investigated in the follow-up six months after the treatment.Results1. The recent total effective rates in the treatment group and control group were 93. 94% and 91.18% respectively without difference between them (P>0. 05) and the scores of dysmenorrhea symptoms of the two groups had significant changes respectively before and after the treatment, but the difference values of the scores between the two groups do not have statistical significance, which indicate that the two therapies have remarkable effect in improving the dysmenorrhea symptoms and their degree were similar.2.The scores of average VAS of the two groups had significant changes respectively before and after the treatment(P<0. 01), but the difference values of the scores between the two groups did not have statistical significance (P>0.05) , which indicated that the two therapies have remarkable effect in relieving pain and their degree were similar.3. The total effective rates of recent TCM symptoms in the treatment group and control group were 96.97% and 85.29% respectively with significant difference between them (P<0. 01), which indicated that the two therapies have remarkable effect in improving the TCM symptoms and their degree were similar. The difference values of the scores of amount, colour and quality of menses between the two groups show significant differences after treatment (P<0. 05) ; but except for the symptoms of abdominal pain, delayed menstruation, aversion to cold, and the picture of tongue and pulse (P>0. 05 ), which indicated that the symptoms of amount, color and quality of menses were better improved in the treatment group than in the control group.4. The recurrent numbers six months after treatment between the two groups showed significant difference (P<0.01) .ConclusionThe acupuncture cyclic sequential therapy and the traditional acupuncture therapy both have remarkable effect in relieving pain and improving the dysmenorrhea symptoms during the short-term course, and their degree were similar. However, the improvement of TCM symptoms of amount, colour and quality of menses were better in the treatment group than in the control group, and the same of the long-term effect. Therefore, the acupuncture cyclic sequential therapy has exact antalgic effect and good long-term effect in treating primary dysmenorrhea.
