Primary dysmenorrhea, as one of the common diseases in adolescence, interferes with many adolescents' daily life. Dysmenorrhea refers to pain, distending and bearing-down sensation in lower abdomen, limp loin and some other discomfort which disturbs work and daily life before, after or during menstruation. It can be divided into primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrheal, which also manifests as pain, distending and bearing-down sensation in lower abdomen during meno-period, has no organic change in genital organs. It is called functional dysmenorrhea . Reports showed that nearly half of the sex mature women had the history of dysmenorrhea. Objective: To observe the instant, short-term and long-dated effect of acupoint catgut embedment in treating primary dysmenorrhea. Methods: Patients with primary dysmenorrhea, who were selected from Guangzhou University of TCM and department of gynecological clinic, would be randomly assigned into acupoint catgut embedment group (ACE group) and medicine group (control group), each of which had 30 patients. The symptoms of dysmenorrhea would be graded, meanwhile, short-term and long-dated effect of the two groups would be compared. The test data were evaluated by SPSS13. 0.Results: The total effctive rate in ACE group and control group was 100% and 40% respectively, so significant divergence was shown between the groups (P<0. 01) . Therefore, ACE group showed more effective in long-dated. After the first medication, grades of symptoms had statistics sense (P<0. 05) , not only in groups but also each other group. According the decrease of grades, the instant effect of control group was better than ACE group. After three medications, symptoms grades showed significant difference (P<0. 05) when compared with before, but had no statistics sense between groups, so the short-term effect of ACE group was as well as that of control group. Three months after treatment, grades of ACE group showed no significant difference(P>0.05) compared with before and the third medication. However, increase grades of control group had significant difference. The facts proved that ACE group was more effective than medicine in long-dated. It would be probably to recrudesce, if treated by medicine. Conclusion: ACE has a satisfactory therapeutic effect on dysmenorrheal. It not only has an excellent instant effect but also shot-term and long-dated effect, and without side effect. By the improving of acupoint catgut embedment needles, it is easy to handle and unnecessary to do local anaesthesia anymore. Therefore, acupoint catgut embedment should be widely used for treating primary dysmenorrheal.
