Objiective: To investigate the relationship between Plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and severity of heart failure and cardiac function in patients with congestive heart failure. Methods: BNP was measured at arrival in 80 patients who had congestive heart failure. Coloured doppler echocardiography was performed to measure left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, endocardial fractional shortening, left atrial diameter and carrdiothoracic ratio was measured by using chest computed radiography. Results: Plasma levels of BNP increased with increasement of NYHA classification. Plasma levels of BNP were a negative correlation with left ventricular ejection fraction r=-0.533 (P<0.001) and endocardial fractional shortening r=-0.486 (?<0.001) . Plasma levels of BNP were a positive correlation with left atrial diameter r=0.400 (P< 0.001) and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter r=0.433 (P<0.001) .Conclusion: Plasma levels of BNP were increased with the severity of heart failure in patients with congestive heart failure. Plasma levels of BNP were a useful marker for early stage diagnosis, illness evaluation and could better reflect cardiac structure and function in patients with congestive heart failure.
