Objective To study the anatomic characters of patellar in chinese, explore the principles of patella prosthesis design for Chinese and the anatomic references in freehand resection of the patella during TKA. Methods 50 patellas of Chinese were classified according to the system of Wiberg's using radiographs made in patellar axial view. The patellas were resected with saw using three marks: the lateral attachment of the patella tendon distally and the two edges of the quadriceps tendon proximally. The thickness of patellar were measured pre and post-resection. Results Among the 50 patellas, there were 5 Wiberg I patella(10%);33 WibergⅡ(66%);11 WibergⅢ(22%);and 1 Wiberg IV (2%).The mean thickness of patella before resection was: 23.39±1.19mm , The mean thickness of patella after resection was: 13.83±1.04mm , which can meet the demand of 12mm for patellar resurfacing arthroplasty during TKA in Chinese(P﹤0.05).Conclusion WibergⅡis the most common type of patella in Chinese. The take offset design of patella prosthesis is a favorable design for Chinese according to the anatomic characters. The three marks are safe to be used in freehand resection of the patella in Chinese.
