Objective:The aim of this study was to compare effects of two different approaches on prevalence of acquired patella baja in total knee arthroplasty.Methods:82 cases need total knee arthroplasty were randomized divided into two groups. One was operated with Mini-Midvastus Capsular Approach (group one:47 cases), the other group was operated with standard medial parapatellar capsular approach (group two:35 cases). In group one, all cases were operated without patella eversion. All cases were taken X-ray pre- and post-operatively, patella height was measured in the radiography. Compare the knee society score, time of operation, blood loss and complication between two groups pre- and post-operation. We defined cutoff level as 5% shortening. Results:We found 8 cases in group one with patella baja (prevalence is 17.0%) and 13 cases in group two (prevalence is 37.1%), there is significant differences (P<0.05). There is no significant differences between two groups in Knee Society Score, time of operation, blood loss and other complication. Conclusion:The prevalence of acquired patella baja is related with or without eversion in the total knee arthroplasty. Operation with Mini-Midvastus capsular approach can decrease prevalence of acquired patella baja.
